SMALL SCALE SANITATION TREATMENT FOR BEETLE INFESTED WOOD LANDS
TDB Consultants Inc. is an authority in providing ultra low impact selective logging and sanitation treatments
to infected woodlands in sensitive areas. An example of this can be found in the
small scale sanitation treatment of municipal areas for the City of Prince George.
Small Scale Sanitation Treatment of sensitive areas is accomplished via a wide range of technologies including the
collection of accurate probe and tally information on infested areas and the subsequent removal of targeted trees.
Collection of information on infested areas: TDB Consultants
Inc. is a multiphase consultant who can manage your beetle
concerns/issues. We have the skills and experience to identify,
survey, track and report problem areas within a given ecosystem,
including silviculture prescription, block layout, access
design and recommend small impact harvesting techniques.
Small Scale Sanitation Treatments: Once enough data is collected to ensure an accurate analysis of an infested area, TDB
will begin SSST operations, targeting only those trees that are infested. The intent is to identify the 'green' trees that
have become hosts for the Mountain Pine Beetle. Over winter, while the beetle is dormant, infested trees are removed from the area
and sanitized. In addition, any trees that are in the later stages of infestation, such as the 'red' or 'grey' trees, and which have
now become a serious fire and safety hazard, are removed from the area and sanitized.
The FORCAT 2000: With its small size and great manoeuvrability, the FORCAT 2000 allows the operator to work right next
to the trees. Because the logs always follow behind the vehicle, it allows a working range up to between 300 to 400 feet
on both sides of the main trail. Also, since the FORCAT 2000 is a skidder that you can convert into a forwarder, the operator
can go into the rough places such as hilly or wet terrain without carrying the trailer behind the vehicle.
The FORCAT 2000, along with other selective specialized equipment, is used in the process of small scale sanitation treatments of
sensitive areas, such as municipal parkland and protected forests. Below you will find links and images that demonstrate the SSST tree removal process using the FORCAT 2000.
